Articles in English Grammar (A, An, The) – Explained in Hindi and English

Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. In English, there are two articles — A(या  An) and The.

Articles वे शब्द हैं जो किसी संज्ञा (Noun) को निश्चित या अनिश्चित रूप में दिखाते हैं। अंग्रेज़ी में दो Articles होते हैं — A (या An) और The.

🔹 Types of Articles (Articles के प्रकार)

1. Indefinite Articles – A, An
2. Definite Article – The

Indefinite Articles का प्रयोग तब किया जाता है जब किसी वस्तु या व्यक्ति के बारे में पहली बार बात की जा रही हो।
Definite Article का प्रयोग तब किया जाता है जब उस वस्तु या व्यक्ति के बारे में पहले से जानकारी हो।

🟢 1. Use of “A”

‘A’ is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.

‘A’ का प्रयोग उन शब्दों के पहले होता है जिनका उच्चारण व्यंजन (Consonant) से शुरू होता है।

✅ Examples:

• A boy is playing in the park. — (एक लड़का पार्क में खेल रहा है।)
• A cat is sleeping on the sofa. — (एक बिल्ली सोफ़े पर सो रही है।)
• A teacher is teaching in the class. — (एक अध्यापक कक्षा में पढ़ा रहा है।)
• A university (university में letter तो u यानि एक vowel है पर sound की शुरुआत यू  यानि consonant से हो रही है इसलिए sound पर ध्यान दीजिये)👇

🟢 2. Use of “An”

‘An’ is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

‘An’ का प्रयोग उन शब्दों के पहले होता है जिनका उच्चारण स्वर (Vowel) से शुरू होता है।

✅ Examples:

• An apple a day keeps the doctor away. — (एक सेब रोज़ खाने से डॉक्टर दूर रहता है।)
• An honest man always speaks truth. — (एक ईमानदार व्यक्ति हमेशा सत्य बोलता है।)
• An umbrella is useful in rain. — (बारिश में छाता उपयोगी होता है।)

Note: यहाँ ध्यान रखें कि 'sound' महत्वपूर्ण है, न कि spelling। जैसे — an hour (h का उच्चारण नहीं होता, इसलिए 'an') 👉 An honest man, An heir

🟢 3. Use of “The”

‘The’ is used to refer to a specific or particular noun as follows

‘The’  का प्रयोग किसी विशिष्ट या विशेष संज्ञा को संदर्भित करने के लिए इस प्रकार किया जाता है:-

1- जब हम किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति या वस्तु की बात करते हैं जिसका पहले ज़िक्र किया जा चुका हो जैसे :- 

     The book you want is out of print. (कौन से किताब? जो तुम्हे चाहिए।)

      Let's go to the market. (वह बाज़ार जहाँ हम अक्सर जाते रहते हैं।)

2- जब एकवचन संज्ञा का अर्थ पूरे वर्ग का प्रतिनिधित्व करना हो; जैसे:-

    The cow is a useful animal (गाय एक लाभदायक जानवर है।note:- यहाँ cow को sungular की तरह प्रयोग किया गया है लेकिन cow से पहले the लगने पर  यह पता चलता है कि एक गाय नहीं बल्कि पूरी गाय जाति ही लाभदायक है )

    The rose is the sweetest of all flowers.

3- कुछ पुस्तकों के नाम से पहले; जैसे:-

    The Quran, the Bible, the Vedas, the Puranas, the Ramayan

4- अपनी तरह की अनूठी चीजों के नाम से पहले; जैसे:-

    The sun, the sky, the ocean, the earth, the moon, the sea.

5- Adjective की superlative degree से पहले; जैसे:-

The biggest, 👉 सबसे बड़ा,   the smallest👉 सबसे छोटा

The highest 👉 सबसे ऊँचा

,

The most beautiful 👉 सबसे सुन्दर

etc.

6- क्रमिक संख्याओं के साथ; जैसे:-

    The first, the second, the third etc.

7- किसी विशेषण से पहले जब संज्ञा का बोध हो; जैसे:-

    The poor = poor people.

    The rich = rich people.

🟢  Use of “The” in the sentences:-

• The sun rises in the east. — (सूरज पूर्व में उगता है।)
• The Taj Mahal is very beautiful. — (ताजमहल बहुत सुंदर है।)
• The book on the table is mine. — (टेबल पर रखी किताब मेरी है।)
• We should recite the Quran daily. — (हमें प्रतिदिन कुरान पढना चाहिए।)
• He is the wisest student in the class. — (वह कक्षा में सबसे होशियार विद्यार्थी है।)

💡 Important Rules (महत्वपूर्ण नियम)

• “A” और “An” का प्रयोग बहुवचन nouns के साथ नहीं होता। 👉 Wrong: A apples are red. ✅ Correct: Apples are red.
• “The” का प्रयोग unique चीज़ों के साथ होता है — जैसे The Earth, The Moon, The Sky.
• जो बिल्डिंग या जो जगह जिस उद्देश्य(मकसद)के लिए बनी है,यदि हम वह उसी काम के लिए जाते हैं तो उस बिल्डिंग या जगह से पहले “The” का प्रयोग नहीं होता है और यदि उसके आलावा किसी और काम से वहाँ जाते हैं तो “The” का प्रयोग ज़रूर होता है;जैसे:-

          

• “A” और “An” का प्रयोग केवल singular countable nouns के साथ होता है।

✨ Quick Trick to Remember

👉 अगर शब्द ‘sound’ vowel से शुरू हो तो “An” लगाएँ, वरना “A” लगाएँ। अगर वस्तु या व्यक्ति पहले से जाना-पहचाना हो, तो “The” लगाएँ।

Remember: Use A or An for general things, and The for specific ones!
